Don't hate me because I'm a Luddite

Can you keep a secret? Sure? Okay...until a few months ago, we never had...cable.

I know.

Between PlaceIWork, grad school, teaching, and two kids + spouse, I don't have much time to watch. But between Dog the Bounty Hunter, Rollergirls, and the Food Network? Man. The temptation is great.

But I am NOT buying a TiVo. A bibliophile has to have some limits.

I want you to know that I've been rabbit-ears-only since 1997. Only problem is that they don't work here in Denver (about a mile from the TV stations), and we finally had to get the 12-dollar basic cable, which is basically rabbit-ear programming.

I stopped my cable because of terrible advertising for my children and inappropriate shows. I also didn't like wasting my time on crap, of course I am caving come wednesday! I'm getting a dvr (like tivo) but only because I want to tape a show and watch only that show at night when the kids are asleep, or tape a show or two for the girls and then they can watch just that and the t.v. will automatically shut off.

I have cable because it's the only way to get fast internet out here in the sticks. And cable is everywhere, unlike DSL.

It's funny...every one of our redneck neighbors, while they may not have a driveable car or a single book in the house, has a cable tv hookup or satellite dish.

That's how things work.

I fought the Mister tooth and nail over the advent of cable and tivo. I'd still give them up if i could get him to agree, but i actually have come around to tivo-- especially now that little H is here. We tivo what we want and only watch while he's asleep. That way we do our part to keep him away from tv.

Sorry i never responded to your post about my DC-area visit. Family visits are hectic, what can i say. I come back periodically though a nd perhaps we can arrange a get-together.

Oh, I looong for TiVo. I'm terrible at remembering to watch programs I like, and those episodes of Project Runway aren't going to watch themselves, you know.

I don't have cable or satellite, not for noble reasons but because I'm too cheap to pay for television.

I may qualify as a Luddite, though. I don't know what Tivo is....
